Have you started using the Whizz e-bike or you are just planning to do it? Whizz has some of the best e-bike batteries on the market.

But if you’re thinking of investing in an e-bike, it might be a good idea to figure out how they work.

You see, e-bike batteries are the life force that powers these electric bicycles. Having a deep understanding of their range, charging capabilities, and lifespan can greatly enhance your riding experience.

Here is everything you need to know about Whizz e-bike batteries.

Whizz e-bike batteries

E-bike batteries are a power source that provides electric bikes with energy. Without them, your e-bike wouldn’t be able to function. They are rechargeable, lightweight, and portable.

For Whizz e-bike batteries, we could say that our UL-certified lithium-ion batteries use Samsung battery cells, as they are the best on the market.

With the advancements in technology, these batteries are reaching up to 85 miles per charge!

Every battery has its capacity and lifespan. On average, most batteries can last for 2 to 3 years, or between 500 and 1,000 charging cycles.

To extend the lifespan for as long as possible, proper maintenance and use is crucial.

Types of e-bike batteries

The first thing you need to know is that there isn’t a single type of battery. In fact, four types are used for electric bikes, and these are:

  • Lead-acid batteries are the earliest type of e-bike batteries. Despite their low price, they are no longer common due to their limited capacity and great weight.
  • Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries have better energy density and a longer lifespan compared to lead-acid batteries. While not as common as lithium-ion ones, they are still a rather popular choice for electric bikes.
  • Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries are the most widespread due to their high energy capacity, lightweight design, and long lifespan.
  • Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are a variation of Li-Ion batteries but with even more power. Due to their high price, they are typically used in high-performance electric bikes.

Understanding battery capacity

Another essential factor is the battery capacity, which determines the range of your electric bike.

Battery capacity can also affect your bike’s overall performance, so it’s important to know how to understand it and what each unit means.

  • Watt-hours (Wh) is used to measure the battery’s energy capacity. This is the amount of energy the battery can deliver in an hour. Higher the Wh, longer the range and greater the power.
  • Voltage (V) is the electrical potential difference. Most e-bike batteries operate at 36V, 48V, or 52V. The higher the voltage, the greater the performance.
  • Amp-hours (Ah) is the amount of current a battery can deliver over a specific period of time. Higher amp-hour ratings indicate more capacity and longer riding distances.

Factors affecting e-bike range

It’s challenging to calculate the range of an e-bike, as it depends on numerous factors.

Some general approximate range is calculated by dividing the total Wh with Wh the e-bike consumes each mile, but it’s not that simple.

Overall, the most common factors that affect the e-bike’s range include:

  • Terrain: Going uphill requires more energy than riding on flat terrains, so it will decrease the range.
  • Rider’s weight: Heavier riders may experience a slightly reduced range compared to lighter riders.
  • Assistance level: The higher the battery assistance level, the lower the range.
  • Riding style: If you ride aggressively, accelerating and going high speeds, you’ll consume more battery and lower the range compared to riders who travel more smoothly and consistently.

Overall, most e-bike batteries can provide a range of 30-60 miles on a single charge. Our e-bikes can reach up to 85 miles with pedal assist.

E-bike battery charging

Proper charging practices are essential for battery performance and lifespan.

Many riders think it’s enough to charge your e-bike battery once it runs out, but it takes more than that.

You can charge batteries either on or off the bike – this entirely depends on the type of electric bike and manufacturer. Some batteries have a built-in charging port. You have to remove the others before charging.

The charging time of an e-bike battery varies depending on its capacity and the charger used. Higher-capacity batteries generally take longer to charge fully. In general, most batteries take between 3 and 6 hours to charge to a 100%.

Many e-bike batteries feature a built-in Battery Management System (BMS), which protects the battery from overcharging, overheating, and other potential issues. Just make sure to use suitable batteries.

While we’re at chargers, make sure to only use the charger provided by the manufacturer. If this isn’t possible, ask them for a compatible one. Otherwise, you might damage the battery or reduce its lifespan.

Proper care and maintenance can significantly extend the battery’s lifespan. Consider the following tips:

  • If you plan to store your e-bike battery for an extended period, ensure it’s stored in a cool, dry place. Keep it at a partial charge, which is around 50%. Don’t store it in extreme temperatures and don’t leave it discharged to less than 10%.
  • Extreme temperatures can harm your battery’s performance. Don’t expose it to excessive cold or heat. If this does happen, store it in an insulation pack. By getting Whizz’s Winter pack, you can get everything you need to keep your e-bike battery working properly even during winter.
  • Regular maintenance is crucial.

Conclusion

Batteries are one of the most important parts of an electric bike. Without them, your e-bike would be no different from a traditional bike!

Always look for reliable manufacturers that sell e-bikes with high-quality batteries and an extensive range.

For example, Whizz’s Storm-2 uses Samsung cell batteries that provide it with a range of up to 85 miles per charge.

And if that isn’t enough – you can always buy an extra one.
