When in Paris, it’s not just the twinkling of the Eiffel Tower that will steal your heart—it’s the flaky, buttery, golden croissants too. I can't be the only person who travels to Paris more excited to eat than to sightsee. Ever since moving to Germany 5 years ago, I have become obsessed with bakeries and I bring that obsession with me when I travel. I've written a number of bakery guides, including in Reykjavik, Stockholm and Copenhagen. Needless to say, I made it my personal mission to find all the best bakeries in Paris too!
From charming neighborhood boulangeries to patisseries run by world-renowned chefs, Paris truly rises to the occasion when it comes to baked goods.
Whether you’re a fan of the classic baguette or you dream of sinking your teeth into an artistic, cream-filled choux, the bakeries of Paris will deliver. I have compiled this bakery guide after several visits to Paris. I've also included a recommendation of what to order, if you want to sample their signature creations. Each bakery on this list is a destination in its own right, with irresistible creations that will have you saying, “Bon appétit” with every bite. So, dust off your appetite (and prepare for a little powdered sugar on your sleeves) as I guide you through the crème de la crème of Parisian baking.
Where To Find The Best Bakeries in Paris

Odette Bakery
What You're Ordering: salted caramel cream puff
Tucked into a cozy corner near Notre-Dame, Odette specializes in one thing: cream puffs. And they’ve perfected it. These delicate choux pastries, filled with a variety of rich creams, are a real treat. My first introduction to choux buns comes from the Great British Bake-Off but I was SO excited to finally try the real thing on a recent trip to Paris. I genuinely liked all the flavors I tried, but my favorites are probably coffee and praline.

Angelina
What You're Ordering: Mont-Blanc dessert
Dating back to 1903, Angelina is the epitome of Parisian elegance. This historic tearoom, frequented by Coco Chanel, offers a timeless experience in a stunning Belle Époque setting. Famous for its decadent hot chocolate and airy macarons, this place usually has a line to get in, so it is best to make reservations or visit at an odd time during the day.

Ble Sucre
What You're Ordering: Madeleines
Ble Sucre is a Parisian institution, beloved for its madeleines. Delightfully puffy and glazed to perfection, the madeleines are legendary and have gained cult status among locals and tourists alike. Set on a charming square, grab your baked goods to go and enjoy them on a bench seat. It’s the perfect spot to linger and people watch.

Pâtisserie Michalak
What You're Ordering: whatever pretty thing stands out to you
From the mind of world-famous pastry chef Christophe Michalak, this boutique redefines the concept of dessert. Playing with the fussy, frilly side of French pastry, the creations made by chef Michalak are inventive and modern. Highlights include La Religieuse, a choux pastry with a cute little collar of salted-butter caramel, and strawberry and pistachio tart. Each bite is a revelation, proving why Michalak is one of the most celebrated pastry chefs in the world.

Du Pain et des Idées
What You're Ordering: escargot pastry
Every loaf and pastry is a work of art at Du Pain et des Idées. Their signatures are escargot pastries. f you aren’t familiar, an escargot pastry is not snails. It is a curled brioche pastry that looks like a snail shell and is ornamented with nuts and a sugary glaze. I was totally blown away by the pistachio and chocolate escargot pastry here, because it isn’t overly sweet yet feels totally indulgent. This is one of the best bakeries in Paris, so buy a baguette too, because they’re so good. Head around the corner to one of my favorite cheese shops in Paris to pick up something to go with your baguette.

Mamiche
What You're Ordering: cookies or a sandwich
Mamiche is a neighborhood bakery bursting with character, known for its warm vibes and modern takes on French staples. The vibe at Mamiche is perfection. Brilliant pastry duet Victoria Effantin and Cécile Khayat opened Mamiche to rave reviews, and it hasn’t stopped its meteoric rise on the Paris baking scene ever since. In the window display, everything is tantalizing – which is good because you’ll probably be waiting in line looking at it for a few minutes. Their gooey chocolate chip cookies and soft, buttery brioche are crowd-pleasers, but honestly, there are no bad choices here.

What You're Ordering: praline macaron
Creating macarons that are nothing short of perfection, Pierre Hermé is the place to come for macarons in Paris. Which is saying something. Signature flavors like Ispahan (rose, lychee, and raspberry) or passionfruit chocolate have a cult following. There are locations all around the city, including the train station and airport.

Sain Bakery
What You're Ordering: croissant or palmier
If there is only one bakery I could go back to in Paris, I think it would be Sain. Revolutionizing Parisian baking with a focus on organic ingredients and natural fermentation, I went back to Sain three days in a row. I really enjoyed their selection of both sweet & savory baked goods. The fig and walnut bread is a standout, along with their hearty yet delicate viennoiseries.
